Market Enthusiasm Reignites for Bitcoin Options with $200k Target

The market is witnessing a resurgence of enthusiasm reminiscent of 2021, with traders in the Bitcoin options market setting their sights on the ambitious $200,000 mark. This speculative interest is centered around options that could yield significant returns if Bitcoin’s price were to triple in the forthcoming months.

On a notable Friday, Deribit, a leading platform in the crypto options exchange, recorded a notional open interest exceeding $20 million for Bitcoin call options with a strike price at $200,000. This strike price is nearly threefold the current market price of Bitcoin, which stands at $67,000. Out of the total interest, $14.6 million is vested in the call option expiring on December 27, with additional interests spread across options set to expire in June and September, as detailed by Deribit Metrics.

Investing in such deep out-of-the-money (OTM) calls, particularly the $200,000 strike price option expiring on December 31, is essentially a wager on Bitcoin finishing the year above this target price. Call options provide investors with the opportunity to purchase the underlying asset at a predetermined price at a future date, reflecting a bullish stance on the market. The term “notional open interest” represents the total U.S. dollar value of active contracts at any given moment, with each contract on Deribit representing one BTC.

The allure of the $200,000 strike call has returned, mirroring its popularity when Bitcoin last soared above $60,000 in 2021. The growing interest in these deep OTM strikes aligns with the anticipation that the upcoming halving event for BTC, which reduces the supply of new coins, will tip the supply-demand balance in favor of price increases, potentially pushing Bitcoin into the six-figure price range.

Currently priced at $3,462 per Bitcoin contract, acquiring this call option posits a potential 58x gain on the investment if Bitcoin’s price reaches the $200,000 mark. While the value of these options is expected to rise if Bitcoin’s price climbs before December, achieving substantial gains does not necessitate the price hitting $200,000 by the expiry date. However, investments in deep OTM calls, seen as analogous to lottery tickets, carry the risk of depreciating to zero if the price does not approach the strike price over time.

The burgeoning interest has propelled the overall activity in the options market to new heights. Deribit’s total open interest in Bitcoin options has surged to an unprecedented $20.4 billion, eclipsing the previous high of $14.36 billion in October 2021. Similarly, open interest in Ethereum (ETH) options has reached a record-breaking $11.66 billion, underscoring the vibrant activity and optimistic sentiment prevailing in the cryptocurrency options market.
