Bitcoin Surges While TONCoin Takes a Hit

Bitcoin finally broke above the crucial $62,000 resistance level, spurred by Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s strong indication that interest rates would soon be lowered. The bond market had already been reflecting this expectation with declining interest rates over the past few weeks, which created a more favorable environment for risk assets like cryptocurrencies. Is the path clear for Bitcoin to reach new all-time highs? Perhaps in the short term, but historically, Fed pivots have often been followed by market downturns. The key question now is whether crypto will continue to move in tandem with other risk assets or start acting as a hedge.

While Bitcoin was making gains over the weekend, TONCoin was facing significant losses. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has reportedly been arrested in France on multiple charges related to his management of the social messaging platform. These reports, which remain unconfirmed and have surfaced through social media and unverified press outlets, claim that Durov was detained when his plane landed at Le Bourget airport near Paris. He allegedly faces serious accusations including terrorism, trafficking, conspiracy, fraud, money laundering, and more.

French commercial television network TF1, citing unnamed sources, reported that a search warrant had been issued contingent upon Durov’s presence on French soil. The report further suggested that Durov rarely traveled within Europe, particularly avoiding countries where Telegram was under surveillance.

In the wake of these yet-to-be-confirmed reports, TONCoin, the cryptocurrency developed by Telegram, has dropped over 10%, falling from its August 24 high of $6.86 to $5.60 as of the time of this article’s publication.

The news has prompted reactions from several high-profile figures around the world. American commentator Candace Owens expressed her concerns, saying, “Do you understand the severity of what is happening yet? Pavel Durov truly believes in free speech and created a platform the deep state doesn’t have access to, so now they have arrested him.” Fox News host Tucker Carlson also weighed in, telling his 13.6 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) that, “Pavel Durov sits in a French jail tonight, a living warning to any platform owner who refuses to censor the truth at the behest of governments and intel agencies.”

This development follows Durov’s April appearance on Carlson’s podcast, where he predicted that increasing government surveillance would lead to the creation of secure communication devices inspired by cryptocurrency hardware wallets. “The world is becoming less amenable. Governments are becoming less tolerant of privacy,” Durov said during the interview. “That’s clearly the trend because they have more technological power,” he added.

Following the publication of the arrest reports, TON issued an official statement on X, though it provided few details about the ongoing investigation. “Following the recent news related to Telegram’s founder Pavel Durov, we want to assure everyone that the TON community remains strong and fully operational,” the statement read. “As a community committed to freedom of speech and decentralization, we stand firmly by Pavel during this challenging time.”
