Michael Saylor Predicts a Decade of Institutional Bitcoin “Gold Rush”

Michael Saylor, co-founder and executive chairman of MicroStrategy, has forecasted a decade-long institutional “gold rush” towards Bitcoin, propelled by the emergence of spot Bitcoin ETFs and the advancement of autonomous artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at the Bitcoin Atlantis conference on March 1, Saylor highlighted that the introduction of spot Bitcoin ETFs has kickstarted a period of significant institutional interest in Bitcoin, which he expects to continue until approximately November 2034.

Saylor pointed out that by 2035, when nearly all of Bitcoin’s finite supply of 21 million coins will have been mined, the cryptocurrency will transition into a growth phase. He underscored the current status of Bitcoin mining, with about 93.5% of its total supply already mined.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs, according to Saylor, are just the beginning, acting as a distribution channel to a fraction of potential investors. He anticipates a surge in Bitcoin investment as traditional financial institutions begin to facilitate Bitcoin transactions for their clients. Saylor predicts that the pressure from major clients will eventually lead banks to adopt Bitcoin custody services, significantly reducing resistance within the financial sector.

Beyond financial institutions, Saylor views Bitcoin as an essential tool for securing the internet amidst the AI revolution, providing a reliable system for watermarking, timestamping, and cryptographically signing digital content. He also suggested that the development of autonomous AI would create a novel demand for Bitcoin as a form of digital energy necessary for the operation of AI entities on the internet.

Addressing environmental concerns related to Bitcoin mining, Saylor argued that the focus on Bitcoin’s energy consumption is shifting as the cryptocurrency becomes more energy-efficient. He anticipates that attention will instead turn to the energy demands of AI, relieving Bitcoin of some of the environmental scrutiny it has faced.

During the same panel, investment strategist Lyn Alden discussed the potential for Bitcoin to attract capital to countries that embrace it, citing the example of Bitcoin Beach in El Salvador and other emerging financial hubs worldwide. Alden criticized the short-sighted approach of countries that restrict or ban Bitcoin, suggesting that such measures fail to prevent capital outflows and instead cost these countries valuable investment opportunities.

Investment manager Lawrence Lepard highlighted that capital controls imposed by oppressive regimes tend to spur Bitcoin adoption, as evidenced by Nigeria’s thriving peer-to-peer Bitcoin market despite previous bans on cryptocurrencies. The panelists concurred that Bitcoin’s inherent strengths allow it to overcome regulatory and operational hurdles, pointing to a future where Bitcoin plays a central role in global finance and technology.
