Fake LedgerLive App Posted on Microsoft’s App Store
Cryptocurrency investigator ZachXBT has unveiled a scam involving nearly $600,000 worth of Bitcoin taken from users who were duped by a counterfeit Ledger Live application found on Microsoft’s app store.
ZachXBT discovered the deceptive app named “Ledger Live Web3” on November 5, which was designed to mimic the legitimate Ledger Live interface used for managing cryptocurrencies via Ledger’s hardware wallets.
The scammer’s wallet, identified by the address “bc1q….y64q,” has accumulated about 16.8 BTC, valued at approximately $588,000, through 38 separate transactions, according to data from Blockchain.com. Records indicate that the scammer has already transferred out about $115,200 in two transactions, leaving roughly $473,800 or 13.5 BTC in the wallet.
Following the revelation of the scam, ZachXBT reported that Microsoft seems to have taken down the fraudulent application from its store.
The scammer’s Bitcoin wallet became active on October 24 with an initial receipt of $5,210. Since then, and particularly after November 2, there have been a series of transactions, with the largest being $81,200 on November 4.
An investigation showed that the phony “Ledger Live Web3” app had been available in Microsoft’s app store since at least October 19. ZachXBT mentioned receiving messages from two victims on November 4 and expressed the opinion that Microsoft “should be held liable” for the presence of the fake app in its marketplace.
This incident isn’t an isolated case; there have been previous reports of imitation Ledger Live applications surfacing on the Microsoft app store, with Ledger’s official support channel on X (previously known as Twitter) issuing warnings to its users in December and again in March.
Although Ledger has not yet made a statement regarding this most recent fraudulent activity, the company consistently advises users that the only secure source for downloading the authentic Ledger Live application is directly through their official website, ledger.com.
