Fed Cuts Interest Rates Half Point

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve implemented its first interest rate reduction since the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, cutting the benchmark rate by half a percentage point. This move is aimed at preventing a potential slowdown in the labor market.

With signs of both weakening inflation and a softening jobs market, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) opted to lower its key overnight borrowing rate by 50 basis points, in line with market expectations, which had recently adjusted to anticipate a larger cut.

Excluding the emergency rate cuts made during the pandemic, the last time the FOMC reduced rates by this much was in 2008, during the global financial crisis.

The new decision places the federal funds rate within a range of 4.75%-5%. While this rate primarily impacts short-term borrowing for banks, it also influences various consumer loans, including mortgages, auto loans, and credit card rates.

Along with the rate cut, the FOMC’s “dot plot” forecast suggests an additional 50 basis points in cuts by the end of the year, closely aligning with market expectations. The projections also point to a full percentage point in rate cuts by the end of 2025 and another half-point by 2026. Overall, the dot plot indicates a total reduction of approximately 2 percentage points beyond this week’s cut.
